Come with a past, leave with a future
Ian Mikardo High School is widely recognised as an exceptional educational environment
in which vulnerable young people make outstanding progress. They support the unique needs
of 40 to 50 young men. Their students have complex needs and difficulties that mainstream
education was ill equipped to handle.
Creative outlets are key for ensuring students
are engaged and have a safe outlet for personal expression. The school’s non-confrontational
method of handling conflict has a proven track record of teaching students to negotiate
difficult situations for themselves. By supporting students in their social, emotional,
as well as academic development, the school empowers these young men, and equips them
with the skills they need to lead constructive and fulfilling adult lives.
Transforming young lives: Building futures with performance and digital arts
The ArtsXchange provides alternative education for 14-19 year olds through a creative arts and media curriculum.
The College believes passionately that learning can – and should be – enjoyable. A creative curriculum puts pleasure back into learning,
particularly if students have been alienated from or excluded by ‘traditional’ and ‘mainstream’ statutory education.
Avoiding and resisting learning in school can often be signs of imagination and creativity. Many young people in alternative education are especially
well suited for a career in the creative industries and the curriculum ensures that young people are able to work towards meaningful accreditation and
qualifications enabling them to access the creative industries and other post-19 options in accordance with their aspirations and dreams.
